A Star In The making

Finally he was away from his roommate, Philip, whose rotund face blabbed on about his family’s summers in Monaco. My daddy the diplomat. My mother, ex-wife of James Cameron. Big deal. He was sick of it all.

So he hadn’t grown up privileged like most of them. But he’d earned his place here. At least he’d make connections at this quiet all-boys’ school tucked into the woods. But it wasn’t easy. Ohio seemed so far away, and he was tired of pretending. Golf carts zipped by on the property the school shared with the course. Fairways were filled with folks from the town of Orange. They were the real people. Like him.

He’d show Philip and the rest one day. His voice would surprise them all. His parents had supported his natural gift for music. It was his love. His destiny. This chorus was just one step closer. Soon he’d be singing opera in Sydney. He’d be the one slinging chips in Monaco. And he’d come back to Woodberry Forest a star. The headmaster would roll out the red carpet.

He stepped into the spotlight, warmed up and ready for his solo. When he opened his mouth even the doormen would swear they’d never heard anything like it. “Good King Wenceslas” rang out. The lights sparkled.
