For the members and contributors of Artistic Realization Technologies, or A.R.T., creativity should never be trapped within the limits of one's body. Developed in 1995 with the help of a seed grant from artist Roy Lichtenstein, A.R.T. is an educational nonprofit program that allows individuals debilitated in the use of their hands, feet and speech to use computers, laser pointers and other devices to instruct trained assistants, aka trackers, to be their arms and hands in painting, photography and sculpting. Working with Easter Seals UCP and artist Tim Lefen, who wrote about his first experiences with A.R.T. in the book “Flying Colors,” Richmond's Art Works has created a permanent space in which trackers and artists can meet to produce their works. The first exhibit is scheduled to open at Art Works on Friday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m.
