This show is going to be good. How do I know? When Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba played at the Richmond Folk Festival in 2011, they mesmerized every crowd they played for with their joyous, lute-led (ngoni) mixture of Afro-beat and African blues. Only Bob Marley and Tito Puente have been more successful in making the music of their homelands more internationally appealing. Sweetening the already sweet deal is the inclusion of Malian force of nature Fatoumata Diawara on the bill. The singer’s 2011 album, “Fatou,” showcases her dynamic talent for modernizing Wassoulou musical traditions without sacrificing the sparse warmth and intimacy of their origins. To see these two together is the stuff that dreams are made of. “A Night of Mali Music” is held Saturday, Feb. 15, at the University of Richmond’s Camp Concert Hall. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16-$32. modlin.richmond.edu.
