A Monumental Race

The Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k is one of Richmond's crown jewel community events.

Richmond is a city that likes to have fun, and it has brought that to running.

The first Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K presented by Kroger attracted just under 2,300 participants in 2000. According to Sports Backers, the organization behind the race, last year’s event put over 24,000 pairs of feet on Monument Avenue for one day of running, walking, bands and community. As 2024 participant Benedict Roemer pointed out, “The race really feels like a celebration of spring, and running, and good times all around.”

Part of the reason for that is how the 10K has evolved over a quarter century. Once considered for serious runners only, it now attracts large numbers of walkers, teams and people new to running. “This event is such a great one because people at all fitness levels can participate,” says Sports Backers PR and Communications Manager Nan Callahan. “It’s become more centered around getting the community active, while still being an excellent race for serious runners.”

A 10K is 6.2 miles, making it an ideal introduction to physical activity for people who haven’t been active, but are looking for an entry point. Sports Backers partners with the YMCA to offer the 10k Training Team, a program which helps participants add mileage over a 10-week training period. “It’s an inclusive atmosphere that gives all participants the confidence that they’ll be able to cross the finish line on race day, and have fun doing so,” Callahan says. “If you can walk a mile, you can do the 10k.”

One of the facets of the 10K that makes it, not only more fun, but unique is the Dress Up and Run contest. Registered participants don their most creative costume—alone or in teams—to run or walk the race. First, second and third prize winners receive a cash prize for their creativity, not to mention the attention and appreciation of sideline spectators along the route.

Part-block party, part-fitness, the lovely 10K course is flat, tree-lined and set to a live musical soundtrack and the neighborly encouragement of well-wishers and supporters. Celebrating Richmond doesn’t get much better than the 10K.
