The Score

Posted on Tue, May 19, 2015 at 1:00 AM

-3 The McDonnells return to the headlines, with the former governor at the federal courthouse to appeal his corruption convictions and his wife’s appeal coming up. It’s like they just can’t stand that Joe Morrissey is getting all the attention.

+2 Local television stations head into the final stretch of May sweeps, pulling out all the stops to get you watching their newscasts. Which explains the 8 News rollout of Juan Conde Smell-O-Vision: It’s like leather driving gloves airing out in the breeze of a coconut grove.

-5 Virginia Commonwealth University’s Anderson Gallery, one of Richmond’s first art galleries, closes after 45 years. That is, unless this is one of those Yoko Ono performance pieces no one understands.

-1 The almost 50-year-old private Bull and Bear Club atop the James Center prepares to shut its doors at the end of May. Guess we’ll have to head back to the Country Club of Virginia for our afternoon cocktails. (Fine, the storm water drainage ditch along the ninth hole.)

+6 The outdoor sports and music festival Dominion Riverrock draws tens of thousands of enthusiasts to Brown’s Island. It’s so crowded the island shakes loose and breaks away, floating down the James like one big paddleboard adventure with jumping dogs as your only way off.
