The Score

A weekly rating of the city zeitgeist.

Posted on Tue, Aug 5, 2014 at 10:15 AM

-8 In its first week, the McDonnell corruption trial churns out stories of embarrassing text messages, extravagant gifts and head-turning photos. And somehow, the former first lady’s lawyers have turned her hair 50 shades of gray.

+5 Crowds pour into the new 52,000-square-foot specialty grocer Southern Season, which features a restaurant, cooking school and 10,000 Virginia foods. Out back, there’s free water and shelter for unemployed food bloggers.

+4 The beginning of August kicks off Virginia Beer Month, with special events, tastings and taps planned at breweries across the city. It’s just too bad Virginia Pretzel Month isn’t till September.

+2 Richmond-based CarLotz, which helps customers sell their cars on consignment, announces expansion plans with the closing of a $5 million round of equity capital. But if you’re trying to get rid of that Hummer H2, you’re still out of luck.

+1 With its popular cheetah cubs turning 10 months old, the Metro Richmond Zoo announces that another female cheetah, Milani, is expected to give birth in September. They know because she’s started asking for gazelle-flavored Ben & Jerry’s.
