The Score

A weekly rating of the city zeitgeist.

+5 Bird lovers show up to see thousands of purple martins passing through Richmond, watching the creatures fly overhead and swoop into trees during the Gone to the Birds festival at the 17th Street Farmers' Market. Plus, there were free droppings for all!

-4 A woman who ran a community program for Virginia Commonwealth University pleads guilty to embezzling $144,000 to pay her own bills — with money meant to help chronically and terminally ill patients. At least in prison she'll only have to deal with a barter system.

+1 Two local gay advocacy groups launch, an online directory of Richmond businesses that welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender patrons. In more progressive cities, such directories are called the Yellow Pages.

+2 Gov. Bob McDonnell announces a town hall tour across the state, kicking off this week in Roanoke and ending in Bristol. First the hair, then the State of the Union response, and now this? Obviously this is all part of his plot to replace Oprah.

+3 Meanwhile, the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation announces that its inaugural convention, with the theme, the Constitution Still Matters, will be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in October. Ladies, just watch out at the after-party for drunk patriots demanding you raise those petticoats above your ankles.
