Several of the city's expensive, nylon "Richmond" welcome banners are blown off their poles on the Lee Bridge and into the James River. Out-of-town fish say they can't recall a more pleasant, inviting city.

One of Richmond's largest employers, Honeywell International Inc., lays off about 130 workers at its nylon-production plant. The city snatches them up to supplement an increasing need for expensive, nylon "Richmond" welcome banners.
