The Score

A weekly rating of the city zeitgeist.

Posted on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 4:00 AM

-3 After a week of counting, the city registrar finishes tallying the provisional ballots from the Nov. 4 election. Then she goes into hibernation for another year.

0 In Henrico, a plan to open an alternative, all-male middle school is scuttled by the School Board, some of whom cite worries about disparity without similar options for girls. Just in time, Chesterfield proposes a school for white girls and white boys.

-4 Midlothian's Salisbury and Bon Air neighborhoods continue to lose sleep as a big cat continues to elude authorities. Meanwhile, nobody seems to care about the multiple giant jackass sightings on the second floor at City Hall.

-2 The Richmond Times-Dispatch holds its 21st  public square discussion about the economy titled “Tough Times.” The event, sponsored by the NRA, includes Tom “Taz” Silvestri's demonstration on stocking a bunker and a class on sawing off a shotgun.

+7 The SunTrust Richmond Marathon experiences record turnout, due mostly to the addition of a half-marathon. The success leads tourism boosters to an epiphany: Why not market the city as “Half as Easy to Love”?
