The Score

A weekly rating of the city zeitgeist.

+5 Republican Delegate Harvey B. Morgan, a 79-year-old pharmacist, introduces one bill to decriminalize simple marijuana possession and another to make it legal for medical purposes. Other state legislators make fun of him, because that's easier than introducing any good ideas of their own.

+7 Adweek names the Martin Agency — pitchmen of Geico, Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut and Freecreditreport.com — as its U.S. ad agency of the year. But things go horribly awry at the firm's celebration when a drunken gecko is discovered face-down in a pan pizza, suffocated by the gooey layer of cheese.

-5 At Open High School in Richmond, teachers will give pupils final grades for the first time since the alternative school's founding in 1972. This comes as a huge relief to Billy Smith, beaten daily for ruining the curve with his constant “pretty darn good” evaluations.

+3 Newly sworn in, Gov. Bob McDonnell is selected to give the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Jan. 27. You may recall that the last Virginian to offer such remarks following a president's State of the Union was Gov. Tim Kaine's errant eyebrow, Tony.

+2 The Flying Squirrels share promotional plans for their inaugural baseball season in Richmond, which include a fireworks show after each of 13 Thursday home games. If only we can watch them after Delegate Morgan's bills pass.
