A Performance Appraisal for Your Marriage

Use HR techniques to assess strengths and weaknesses.

Many people dread performance-review season at their jobs. So imagine what it would be like to go through it to assess your marriage.

That’s just what the Wall Street Journal explores in an article today, citing an article in the September 2014 issue of The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

How does it work? You and your spouse meet together (casual Friday dress optional) to go over such points as:

What positive praise do you have for your marriage?

Are you good friends, consider your marriage a high priority, talk a lot, and so on?

Rate five factors on a scale of one to five, including over-stress at work, sex activities, communication and quality time.

Note one area for improvement and create an action plan.

Sign off with a positive goal.

If it’s a good review, you might want to consider giving yourselves raises of maybe 2 percent, stock options, a nice dinner and (you fill in the blank).
