Vocalist and sound artist Nadah El Shazly from Cairo, Egypt will be kicking off First Fridays at the ICA at VCU.
Nadah El Shazly in the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU on Friday, Feb. 3.
If you’ve been to Egypt, you know the daily sights and sounds are very unfamiliar to Western ears. Looking for something different on your Friday evening in Richmond? Then head to the ICA to check out vocalist, sound artist and producer, Nadah El Shazly, who hails from Cairo and whose debut album, “Ahwar,” uses voice, field recordings and instruments to “radically reinvent the popular music of her homeland from the early 19th century and explore new sonic and harmonic frontiers … [creating] haunting sound pieces and song forms that hijack the perception of time with their complex layers and dynamic structure.” Sounds good to us. The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and is free. 601. W. Broad St.

Also on the stacked bill, Piranha Rama fills its first stage of 2023 after recent success opening for Pavement in Atlanta and Austin.
