Posted By on Tue, Sep 8, 2015 at 1:28 PM

Popping up: Travis Milton, former chef at Comfort, is giving Richmond a preview of what he’ll be making at his not-yet-opened new restaurant, Shovel and Pick. Milton calls it a pop-up residency at Rappahannock and it’ll happen on most Monday nights. There are two seatings, starting at 6 p.m., and you can expect a six-course, prix fixe dinner for $68, not including alcohol. facebook.com/RappahannockRVA.

Openings: Even as the much-beloved restaurant the Magpie closed, downtown breakfast and lunch spot Citizen opened in a larger, airier space at 1203 E. Main St. … Ginger Juice, a fixture at the South of the James and Saint Stephen’s farmers markets, will open in a new storefront at the Village Shopping Center at 7019 E. Three Chopt Road. In addition to its line of juices, owner Erin Powell will offer lunch and dinner bowls from Goatcado. A mid-September opening is planned.

Re-opening: Old favorite Balliceaux reopened as Kampot at Balliceaux with a spiffed-up interior and a new menu that includes things such as green papaya with Hanover tomatoes and Virginia peanuts, escargot wontons and steamed clams with chorizo and kaffir lime. It’s overseen by new chef John Wilson. balliceauxrva.com.

Beer news: The search for the great American beer bar is on. Richmond’s Mekong has won the title the last two years in a row, and you can vote for your favorite bar by visiting craftbeer.com. Winners will be announced at the end of September.

Happenings: Shish kebabs, beoreg and hummus will be on display at the Aremenian Food Festival. It runs Friday, Sept. 11, to Sunday, Sept. 13, at St. James Armenian Church at Pepper and Patterson avenues. armenianfoodfestival.com.
