Giving Back

A wine dinner at Rappahannock helps support the No Kid Hungry campaign.

Our governor is down with Richmond restaurants. If you’d like to meet him, he’ll be attending Rappahannock's fundraiser for Share our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign on Tuesday, April 21.

But there’s a more important reason for food lovers to come. Rappahannock chef Dylan Fultineer's mentor, chef Paul Kahan of Chicago’s Blackbird, Avec, the Publican, Big Star, Publican Quality Meats, Nico Osteria -- and a James Beard-award winner for Outstanding Chef -- will be cooking alongside his former apprentice.

They’re planning a spring oyster stew with snail sausage and morels, and grilled lamb shoulders with fava beans, fried quinoa and charred lemon, among other dishes. Fava beans are such an unbelievable pain to peel, even if it weren’t for the spectacular talent behind the stove, it’s almost worth going just for that portion of the meal.

Rappahannock owner Travis Croxton says that a plated first course will be served and the next will arrive family-style. The five courses will be paired with Virginia wines.

Along with Fultineer and Kahan, Chicago chef Cosmo Gross of the Publican and Executive Mansion chef Chris Blain will help to create the dinner as well.

Share Our Strength is a nonprofit that endeavors to end child hunger in this country through its No Kid Hungry campaign. According to its website, it works to do this by establishing summer meals sites, starting and improving school breakfast programs, and teaching families how to shop for and prepare healthy meals on a budget -- plus it awards grants to other nonprofits with the same mission.

The dinner is Tuesday, April 21, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $200. For more details and to purchase tickets, follow this link to the event’s page.
