The streets are strewn with seeds and sweet pink juices after this popular day in celebration of one of our favorite fruits and vegetables. Having originated in West Africa, watermelon is around 91 percent water, so it’s good for hot summers. Last year, more than 115,000 people showed up to chow down on more than 3,000 melons, with around 50 performances and tons of vendors. It wouldn’t be August in Richmond without this one. Presented by Publix, it starts at 10 a.m. Free. carytownrva.com/watermelon-festival.html.
