One decision we see coming is choosing between headliners Gary U.S. Bonds (Norfolk sound) and Maceo Parker (funk) on Saturday afternoon. Bonds is playing at 6:15 at Dominion Dance Pavilion while Parker will be at Altria from 6-7. If you’re staying all evening, we suggest waiting to see Parker until his late set at Dominion Dance Pavilion — where the sweaty, close quarters will only enhance the funk.
Cross-Hybrid Tip
We suggest taking advantage of the collaborative group presentations from Juke Juke Joints, Honky-Tonks, and Old-Time Religion (Saturday, 2-3 p.m.) and, overlapping from 2:30-3:30, World Song Slam: From Queens to the Congo (more accurately wouldn’t that be from the Congo to Queens?). Then there’s the Big Squeeze: Accordion Masters (Saturday, 5:30-6:15). All are a great way to understand the cross-hybridization of cultures through music while getting a sampling of the sounds.
