What We’ll Probably Do

FRIDAY

See Dancer’s Delight schedule. But the upside: Adonis Puentes starts at 8 p.m. at Community Foundation, so you can leave Delafose at any time to catch him.

SATURDAY

Noon to 12:05 — Frank Newsome (opening Old Regular Baptist hymn) at Virginia Folklife Stage

12:15 to 1:15 p.m. — the Fairfield Four (black gospel quartet singing) at WestRock Foundation Stage

1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. — Homayoun Sakhi and Salar Nader (Afghan rubab and table) at Altria

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. — World Song Slam: From Queens to the Congo (beatboxing to Afrisa). This should be a fascinating demonstration particularly of African song traditions and rural other genres.

3 to 4 p.m. — Conteno (conjunto Tejano and norteno) at Dominion Dance Pavilion

4:15 to 5:15 p.m. — The Beatbox goes on: Rahzel, Nicole Paris and Ed Cage (beatboxing) at Dominion Dance Pavilion

7:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (Southern Italian pizzica tarantata)

SUNDAY

Noon to 12:45 p.m. — Balinese All Stars (gamelan orchestra) at WestRock Foundation Stage

Dilemma No. 1
One decision we see coming is choosing between headliners Gary U.S. Bonds (Norfolk sound) and Maceo Parker (funk) on Saturday afternoon. Bonds is playing at 6:15 at Dominion Dance Pavilion while Parker will be at Altria from 6-7. If you’re staying all evening, we suggest waiting to see Parker until his late set at Dominion Dance Pavilion — where the sweaty, close quarters will only enhance the funk.

Cross-Hybrid Tip
We suggest taking advantage of the collaborative group presentations from Juke Juke Joints, Honky-Tonks, and Old-Time Religion (Saturday, 2-3 p.m.) and, overlapping from 2:30-3:30, World Song Slam: From Queens to the Congo (more accurately wouldn’t that be from the Congo to Queens?). Then there’s the Big Squeeze: Accordion Masters (Saturday, 5:30-6:15). All are a great way to understand the cross-hybridization of cultures through music while getting a sampling of the sounds.
