A month ago this week, city streets were beginning to surge with the colors, spinning wheels and international flair of the UCI Road World Championships. And that helicopter, always on the move, hovering. The event may not have been universally beloved by locals, but it was a thrill. People cheered, people debated, people worked to connect their businesses. People remembered they had bikes in their garages. And there were also the people who unplugged, the disinterested and dispassionate. This is what happens. But it doesn’t take Richmond’s biggest sporting event — ever — for a city to show its colors. What you won’t find featured on the following pages are the people who unplug. These young men and women are the ones who cheer, debate, create and work. They try to make the most of challenging situations. They aren’t afraid to ask the tough questions for the right reasons. Always on the move, hovering. — Jason Roop
