There isn’t a nook or cranny in this town that wasn’t covered in blood at one time or another. Most people obsess over the gory aspects of our local history, but WRIR-FM 97.3, the low-power radio station for the rest of us, offers a less divisive assessment of Richmond’s past with its Music History Tour on Saturday, Sept. 28. Richmond music historians Greg Kimball, Don Harrison and members of Richmond Independent Radio’s volunteer staff will take attendees on a magical mystery bus tour through the past, present and future of our humble Southern abode that, for whatever reason, remains virtually unknown, which is strange for a city that takes such pride in promoting its historical significance. This year’s tour highlights gospel and jazz, from the glory days of Second Street to the hovels that birthed Avail, Lamb of God, Gwar and others during the last 150-odd years. If you aren’t hearing our musical history, you aren’t getting the full story. Tours at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting at Bandito’s Burrito Lounge. Tickets are $25. wrir.org.
