As the third most popular drink in the world after water and tea, beer is the social lubricant of civilization. A beverage with its own culture, history and science, this fermented drink is as beloved for its enabling properties as it is for its inhibiting ones. Reaching out to Richmond's hop enthusiasts, All About Beer magazine and Fetch a Cure present the World Beer Festival. Offering attendees a sampling of hundreds of beers from more than 200 domestic and international breweries with two four-hour sessions, from noon-4 p.m. or 6-10 p.m. on Brown's Island, they offer an opportunity to drink and be merry Saturday, June 12. $40-$50. allaboutbeer.com/wbfrichmond.  — Mike Hilleary
