Now in his late 70s, Willie Nelson is one of the few remaining names of country music's outlaw guard. Easily lumped together with the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson, Nelson has an amiable, freewheeling sound borrowed from a variety of styles — traditional country, cowboy songs, honky tonk, folk, jazz and blues. With a career spanning more than 40 years of recording, including duets, covers, standards and his own iconic originals such as “On the Road Again,” the IRS-evading, bio-diesel-promoting, marijuana-smoking enthusiast is scheduled to celebrate a special Mardi Gras concert at the National on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.
