Why The Long Face?

An open letter to the image of Lyle Lovett, being supportive of his offbeat life and professional decisions.

It's that wit of yours, Mr. Lovett, that sense of the ridiculous that makes you the Dali of singer-songwriters. In "I Love Everybody," what did you say? "Penguins are so sensitive/To my needs." That's just what we expect from you, buddy. And speaking of strange romance, you penned "That's Right (You're Not From Texas)," a fast and breathless homage to the wife. They don't all work out, man. But hey, what's Julia doing these days, anyway? "Oceans 13"? Ah, you don't need that: Whether it's gospel, dusty country or big old swing, you're a real troubadour. We'll see you at Innsbrook After Hours, July 28, about 5:30 p.m. or so. Tickets are $20 at 794-6700 or www.innsbrookafterhours.com. And you were right about fat babies after all; they really don't have pride. — Brandon Reynolds
