Volleyball Club Happy With Center

As the organizer of three national volleyball tournaments held at the convention center, I want to spike your statement that sporting events are regional in your cover story published Feb. 28 ("Empty Promises").

The Richmond Volleyball Club has teamed up with the Sports Backers to host national volleyball tournaments for both boys and girls for the past three years. In 2006 we hosted three events that drew over 8,000 people to the Greater Richmond Convention Center and, combined, used 3,900 hotel room nights.

As a coach and at times serving as tournament staff, I have participated in some of the largest volleyball tournaments in the country. These annual events are held at convention centers in Dallas, Atlanta, Baltimore, Columbus and Salt Lake City. Richmond is now recognized with these prominent cities as a national player in volleyball tournaments.

In the future please dig a little deeper, and you will quickly see that most of the sporting events held at the convention center draw large crowds from across the country and contribute substantially to the bottom line of area hotels, restaurants and retail stores.
