Virginia Opera's “The Barber of Seville” does it like Bugs does it

The earliest exposure most of us ever had to Gioacchino Rossini's “The Barber of Seville” was a seven-minute animated short starring Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, improvising some very different stage cues during the Italian staple's famous overture. While it's unlikely there will be any violent shotgun blasts, snake-charmed electric shavers or sandbags dropped like bombs, the Virginia Opera and the Richmond Symphony will undoubtedly do their best to entertain audiences with a much more faithful production of the comedic opera. Following the humorous ruses of the singing barber Figaro as he helps his former master Count Almaviva woo and marry the beautiful Rosina, “The Barber of Seville” comes to the Landmark Theater at 8 p.m. Friday, March 27, with a repeat performance Sunday, March 29, at 2:30 p.m. $22-$98. 262-8003. — Mike Hilleary
