Video Hippos at Church of Crystal Light

Besides the consistent sonic melodies and psychedelic, hyper-color pop culture projections at live shows, the Video Hippos' stage dynamic has made them a rising musical attraction around Baltimore. With drummer Kevin O'Meara's manic snare a hammering counterpoint to guitarist Jim Triplett's gentle, standstill vocal performance, the band's drowsy compositions and oversaturated neon images on stage create the sort of alternative universe where smart experimental pop finds a colorful gravitational pull. Catch them play the Church of Crystal Light on Friday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. Free. 467-8904. — Alexander Chang
