Drivers traveling past Virginia Commonwealth University should expect delays because of the construction of two foot bridges, meant to ease traffic flow during the UCI Road World Championships. The bike races are scheduled for Sept. 19-27.

Construction on the first bridge -- which spans across West Main Street between Cherry and Harrison streets -- was set to completely block traffic on the thoroughfare Tuesday and Wednesday, VCU said in a release.

A second pedestrian bridge will be constructed over West Franklin Street, at its intersection with Shafer Street. Crews will be out Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. After construction is complete, Shafer Street will be closed for northbound turns from West Franklin Street. There will be no parking on West Franklin Street between North Harrison and North Laurel streets and sidewalks around the immediate construction area will be closed.
