Vandaveer at Gallery5

Borrowing the middle name used by many of the men in his family, Mark Charles Heidinger's folk outfit, Vandaveer, often feels like its own kind of heirloom, something intimate that's designed to bring up the past. Accompanied by female vocalist Rose Guerin, the Kentucky native brings a pastoral, son-of-a-preacher piousness to his earnest acoustic ballads, tunes that often burn slowly under his smoky lyrical delivery. Lingering somewhere above Tom Waits' gutter woes and under Nick Drake's “Pink Moon,” the members of Vandaveer perform their melodic ruminations at Gallery5 on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., supporting their recently released sophomore effort, “Divide and Conquer.” $6. 644-0005. - Mike Hilleary
