Spending his early days working in cocktail lounges performing things as varied as classical standards and Top 40 hits, folk artist Vance Gilbert inevitably set out to start writing his own material after hearing Shawn Colvin perform in Boston (he eventually opened for Colvin when word of his open-mic performances spread). Employing all kinds of flourishes and tics of soul, jazz, funk and R&B, landing him an unnaturally cool spot between Stevie Wonder and James Taylor, Gilbert has established a career high with his latest album, “Up on Rockfield.” Gilbert is scheduled to perform at Ashland Coffee and Tea on Friday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. $15-$20. 798-1702.
