The iPod may be your listening device of choice, with its shuffle options and genius play lists, but no matter how we connect with our favorite tunes a hundred years from now, chances are the airwaves will still carry music from some isolated radio station. Since 2005, the volunteer staff at WRIR — Richmond Independent Radio— has provided the R-Town music scene with a fresh kind of perspective for new and little-heard music (as well as spotlighting vital national and local news programming). Helping the organization continue its good work, Gallery5 will hold “Under the Covers,” a benefit featuring performances by some of the area’s best local cover bands, including the Sweater Band (Weezer), Zepp Repplica (Led Zeppelin), Pretend Pretenders (the Pretenders) and the Green Hearts (power-pop hits). With proceeds going to Gallery5 and WRIR, “Under the Covers” is scheduled to take place during the First Fridays Art Walk on July 1 at 7 p.m. $5. 644-0005
