Top 10 Patios

1) Legend Brewing Company. This city often forgets to be proud of itself; Legend's South Sider view of the skyline reminds us what we're all here to do: drink.

2) Havana '59. All tiers and excellent views of Shockoe Bottom and the Farmers' Market; if only more downtown spots used their roofs.

3) Bottom's Up Pizza. The decks at this Shockoe Bottom location have their own sprawling existence, and offer stark, wonderful vistas of the massive industrial clockwork at the center of the city. Plus, trains.

4) Beauregard's Thai Room. A leafy oasis with fountain and fish, exceptionally hot Thai food and potent, fruity drinks; a tropical hideout in the South.

5) Que Pasa. A great big Church Hill spot, overlooking the city as it does, and site of a steady stream of salsa and Latin music from Bio Ritmo side projects.

6) Baja Bean. Does this place even have an inside? Why yes, it does, where you can retreat for pool and frivolity. But outside, the sprawling deck has its own bar. Also, trees, one of which we've seen someone climb.

7) Easy Street. Good thing this Main Street spot reopened; it has one of the Fan's best outdoor lounges — and, you can stay out there late.

8) DeLux. The hidden patio, just past the servers' stations, out the back — yeah, where privacy fences conceal the giant umbrellas, fat chairs and slick murals from the outside world.

9) Patrick Henry Pub. Shady deck on the quiet side of Church Hill with a strong Southern feel; it's always late-afternoon out here.

10) Bin 22 @ Betsy's / Nacho Mama's (tie). Two good views of Carytown, one blurred from pinot, the other obscured by frozen margaritas.

Patios: Pros and Cons

• You can smell Richmond (pro or con in the summer).

• Good for sunbathing and smoking.

• No protection from bird poop.

• People watching rules.

• Better if you had beans at dinner.

• Chance a breeze could lift up a skirt.

• Cell phone reception good, but can lead to drunk texting.
