Guitarist Tony Rice has participated in many of the most interesting and successful variations of traditional acoustic music: progressive bluegrass, new grass, dawg and space grass. An innovative, influential player, Rice's agile, fluent flat-picking style melds traditional melodic forms with sophisticated, jazz-inflected touches that color outside the lines of the usual three-chord harmonies. He's one of a generation of players — including last year's performer Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs and David Grisman — who have advanced the vocabulary and expanded the range of their instruments while staying true to folk
