We introduce some additional levity this week with the debut of the comic strip "Rum Slaps," the result of our third annual Comic Strip Issue earlier this month. The strip is scheduled to run every other week in Style by Richmond collaborators Jamie Douglas and Andy Rees.
Douglas is a 24-year-old artist who studied illustration at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he met Rees, the writer. The two became friends as freshmen and created cartoons for the university's Reporter Magazine. After a spring-break road trip that took them into Richmond, they decided to move here after graduation in 2010.
Douglas was the official winner of Style's 2012 Comic Strip issue, though he and Rees also submitted joint entries. They've both taken us up on the prize, a paid cartoonist gig with Style. They'll alternate weeks with "Ruth and Nail" by local artist Ruthie Proctor, who won last year's contest. Other comics continuing their run in Style include "Twice-Chewed Tales" by contributor Dale Brumfield and "The HR Department" by Style Creative Director Ed Harrington, whose work recently earned national honors from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia.
We're proud to be the home of four locally produced strips, and we hope the talents of these Richmond artists add a little humor to your week.
