As a writer of the Romantic period, Edgar Allan Poe embraced the use of extreme description, a writing style perfect for visual adaptations. Continuing the celebration of the American author's bicentennial, Haunts of Richmond presents “A Midsummer Night's Scream!” a stage adaptation of Poe's gothic short stories, including “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.” This theatric tribute to the macabre master opens Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre with a special encore performance Saturday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. $7-$9.
