The Judges

Catherine Baab works as an advertising copywriter and contributes to Style Weekly and its magazine for Richmond women, Belle. In 2007, she completed a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and in 2008 she won the James River Writers' Best Unpublished Novel contest. She won second place in the 2006 Style Weekly Fiction Contest for her story, “The Last Reader.”

Valley Haggard, director of the Richmond Young Writers summer workshops at Chop Suey Books, is also the producer of the James River Writers' monthly Writing Show. She has written about books and authors for Style Weekly since 2004. This is her fifth year judging the fiction contest.

Darren Morris' writing has recently appeared or is forthcoming in The National Poetry Review, Memorious: A Journal of New Verse and Fiction; Best New Poets 2006 and 2008; The Spoon River Poetry Review; Hayden's Ferry Review and The American Poetry Review. He freelances for Style and works full-time as an instructional designer.

Brandon Reynolds is Style Weekly's Arts & Culture editor, a position he holds in large part because in 2003 he won third place in Style's first fiction contest for a story called “Red Scare.” A story on Valentine's Meat-Juice comes out in June in Oxford American magazine. He is leaving Style in July for the University of Southern California where he received an Annenberg fellowship to pursue a master's degree in specialized journalism.
