The Hot Seats are indeed a little off, and evidence of their twisted bluegrass musicality comes in a lot of forms. For starters, until quite recently they were known as they very un-PC name Special Ed and the Shortbus. With a few of the band's more interestingly titled songs, including “Sell Your Babies,” “Trouser Gravy,” “Who Flung Poo?” and “Don't Worry 'Bout the Poor,” it has the honor of being one of few bands in existence to use an armpit solo. Satirically silly or just offensively unaware, this Virginia quintet has made a name for itself by delivering some seriously zany and unpredictable stage performances, delivering the kind of old-timey washboard stompers that are clearly more about fun than self-importance. Performing at the second annual Richmond Roots Music Extravaganza with Jackass Flats and Barnun, the Hot Seats are scheduled to play the Camel at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31. $20. 353-4901.
