In the Philippines, karaoke is taken very, very seriously. At least six people have been killed there in recent years for singing Frank Sinatra’s defiant anthem “My Way” in karaoke bars. Get a more peaceful taste of the Filipino culture and cuisine at the two-day Filipino Festival. Folk dances will be presented by the Richmond Pilipino Class, the Latin Ballet of Virginia and the Migrant Heritage Commission’s Fil-Am Dance Ensemble, along with music from Keith Horne, Janet Martin, D’Originals, Cedar Creek, McGill Jackson, TH Band and the Five and Dimers. Proceeds will be used to help establish the Lakeside Free Clinic, as well as support Our Lady of Lourdes Church’s various ministries. The Filipino Festival takes place at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Aug. 10 and 11. Free. filipinofestival.org.
