The Decemberists at the National

Listening to Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, you shan't be surprised that he graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in creative writing. The musician still finds plenty of ways to sprinkle his literary imagination into his songwriting. He and his band look to various artistic geniuses for lyrical motivation — as wide-ranging as Shakespeare and painter Marcel Duchamp — and their latest effort, “The Hazards of Love,” brings a new wave of nerdy inspiration to the table. In the vein of 2006's “The Crane Wife,” the band once again crafts a musical fairy tale. This time it involves a woman named Margaret, a plethora of villains, forests, and of course, love. The Decemberists, with their organs and accordions in tow, play the National alongside openers Blind Pilot on Friday, June 5, at 9 p.m. $28-$30. 612-1900 or www.thenationalva.com. — Veronica Garabelli
