Style Weekly Receives National Press Awards

Judges for the national Association of Alternative Newsweeklies' annual journalism competition have handed five awards to Style Weekly, recognizing work in reporting, photography and arts coverage.

Style took home three first-place AltWeekly Awards, among papers with a circulation of 50,000 or less, for:

- “Final Delivery,” a cover story on the future of daily newspapers such as the Richmond Times-Dispatch, in the media reporting and criticism category. Scott Bass, Chris Dovi, Rich Griset, Laura Robertson and Greg Weatherford contributed to the package.

- “Art on Trial,” a cover story by Edwin Slipek Jr., in the arts feature category. The story detailed the behind-the-scenes process and debate about the public art that was proposed but wasn't to be at the Manchester Courthouse.

- Stories by Chris Dovi on the city CAPS program and Richmond's war on culture, in the long-form news category: “Show Stoppers,” “Curdled Culture” and “Mayor Vows to Protect First Fridays.”

Also in the contest:

- Scott Elmquist won second place in the photography category for a portfolio of work.

- Jason Roop received third place in the multimedia category for VirginiaTalks.com's live Web broadcast of the Virginia gubernatorial debate and his behind-the-scenes online video about the event.

More than 90 alternative newsweeklies competed in two circulation categories, with some 1,100 entries in the contest overall. Awards were announced out at AAN's 33rd annual convention, held this past weekend in Toronto.
