These were among the Style Weekly stories to earn national recognition in the 2007 AltWeekly Awards, a competition honoring the best of journalism at alternative newsweeklies across the country.
Patricia Calhoun, editor of Westword in Denver, announced the results during a ceremony at the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies' 30th annual convention in Portland, Ore., June 15. Style Editor Jason Roop represented the paper at the event.
Style received the highest number of awards in the country, second only to the L.A. Weekly, which competes in the 60,000-plus circulation division. Style competes in the 60,000-and-fewer circulation division.

s awards were as follows: News Editor Scott Bass, a first place in the reporting wild-card category, immigration, for his cover story "Alienated."
Designer Ed Harrington, a first place in editorial layout for "State of the Plate," Style's annual restaurant issue.
A first place in photography to Scott Elmquist and Stephen Salpukas for their essay, "Hidden Richmond"; and a second place to Elmquist for his essay on a series of candlelight vigils in the aftermath of Richmond homicides, "The Mourning After."
Style film critic Thomas Peyser, a first place in arts criticism; and Style restaurant critic Joseph W. Cates, a third place for food writing/criticism.
A second place in media reporting/criticism for "Truth and Consequences" and a series of follow-up stories about changes at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, for Greg Weatherford, Greg Lohr, Melissa Scott Sinclair and Brandon Walters Davis.
A first place in Web site design for Copeland Casati of Copeland Casati Media, Chris Hull of Helium Design Studio and the Style staff for www.styleweekly.com.
A third place in ad design to Art Director Jeffrey Bland for his ads promoting Style's Music Issue Launch Party.
