In an international competition honoring the best of newspaper design, Style Weekly Art Director Jeffrey Bland recently received three awards of excellence competing against publications with circulations of 49,999 or less.
The work recognized included "Paper Trail," an opening-page spread for last summer's cover story on turmoil at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and for the popsicle-themed illustration and cover for our annual summer guide. Bland also won for his body of work entered in the Feature Page Designer Portfolio category.
The 28th Annual Best of Newspaper Design Competition is sponsored by the Society for News Design and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
Closer to home, Bland recently received two awards of merit at Grade 2007, a competition sponsored by the Richmond chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He shared one of the awards, for his "Reasons to Love Richmond" cover in 2006, with Style Weekly Photography Editor Scott Elmquist.
Richmond should take the time to look a little deeper when borrowing from other cities. Claims made by proponents of new ballparks usually are overstated.
"We live in an age of increasing ubiquity, in which the quirks and eccentricities of local businesses are being overshadowed by the blandness of national retailers and service providers."
Style Weekly's mission is to provide smart, witty and tenacious coverage of Richmond. Our editorial team strives to reveal Richmond's true identity through unflinching journalism, incisive writing, thoughtful criticism, arresting photography and sophisticated presentation.
We make sense of the news; pursue those in power; explore the city's arts and culture; open windows on provocative ideas; and help readers know Richmond through its people. We give readers the information to make intelligent decisions.
