Despite grinding out his early career as a solid songwriting survivalist, releasing a few self-released solo albums and devoting himself to the travel-weary exposure along the college touring circuit, it wasn't until Stephen Kellogg assembled his backing band the Sixers that he really understood the benefits of creative collaboration. Hitting his collective stride alongside Keith “Kit” Karlson and Brian “Boots” Factor during the past several years, Kellogg's freewheeling mix of pop-rock story songs, highlighted by soulful midtempo folk melodies, has never been stronger in the wake of the band's most recent album, “The Bear.” Headlining this week's Friday Cheers, Kellogg and the Sixers perform at Brown Island on Friday, May 28, at 7 p.m. $2.
