So You Think You Can Dance at the Richmond Coliseum

Is it another example of network television's sad decline from scripted escapist entertainment into cheap, elimination-based contests? Or a legitimate opportunity for the nation's aspiring populace to showcase its talent? However you chalk it up, there's no shortage of broadcasted reality competitions. In work as varied as “Project Runway,” “Top Chef” and powerhouse “American Idol,” it seems like everyone has the potential to be the best at something for a season-length period.

Definitely more interesting than watching a bunch of B-list actors and musical artists, retired athletes and former politicians (we're looking at you Tom DeLay) scrape for a few more minutes of public exposure, Fox's “So You Think You Can Dance” at least features young men and women hungry for a legitimate career. Giving fans a chance to watch their favorites in a live setting, the Richmond Coliseum welcomes the program's fifth season finalists for a special performance Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. $37.50-$55. 800-745-3000.
