Singin' and Swashbucklin'

Nothing works better than a hip Hollywood tie-in to make a cautious observer consider a trip to the opera. The Virginia Opera is staging "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Landmark Theater and has skillfully incorporated images that recall Johnny Depp's Captain Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean." This production weds action and satire like the popular movie, but unlike that blockbuster, it features voices that should be more pleasing to your ear than, say, Keith Richards. The opera sails Friday, Nov. 23, at 8 p.m. and again Sunday, Nov. 25, at 2:30 p.m. $20-$85. Call 262-8003 or visit
