Showcase Showdown at Toad's Place

The amphibious proprietors of Richmond's waterside entertainment venue have assembled indie rock bands from around the region for the Virginia Rock Showcase. The Sketches, from the nation's capital, make power pop. Sparky's Flaw, based in Jefferson's hometown, has been compared with bankable pop groups like Maroon 5. Tokyo may be named after Godzilla's old stomping grounds, but the band developed its Coldplaying in Virginia Beach. These groups have enough talent to keep this year-end show, even with reduced ticket prices, from looking like a clearance sale. Thursday, Dec. 27, at 8 p.m. $4-$7. 649-TOAD.
