Fresh off a record-breaking Mother's Day brunch, the folks at Positive Vibe CafAc are set to announce their newest triumph. And that's in addition to hiring master chef Frits Huntjens last month to manage the six-year-old business. Now they're expanding to a downtown location, taking over the cafe at the Library of Virginia at 800 E. Broad St.
The cafe is expected to open at the end of June when an interior redesign by Helen Reed is complete. The smallish space will have more color and more comfort in the form of couches and chairs, Wi-Fi and fresh food — “a place to hang out, and exposure that can't be beat,” Vibe founder Garth Larcen says. A new revenue stream and potential customer base “is a great step for us — a collaboration between two nonprofits,” he says. Chefs Jannequin Bennett, Andrea Huntjens and others will contribute menu ideas; at least a couple of Vibe graduates will work in the new spot.
Positive Vibe's mission, to train workers with cognitive and physical disabilities for jobs in the food-service industry, continues to be one of Richmond's restaurant success stories, now immortalized in a book, “The Possibility,” by Shirley Carson Walker. Many of its 300-plus graduates are working locally.
