Beyoncé may be a chart-topping superstar, but if there ever was an heir to the legacy of Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Tina Turner, it would be Miss Sharon Jones, who has finally gotten the recognition she deserves (alongside her band the Dap-Kings) for bringing an uncanny life and energy to the retro funk and soul of the 1960s. Able to have her fierce voice wail, groove and emote with a ton of real-life experience, Jones and her band’s tight-knit instrumental arrangements have all the swagger, grit and bravado of old-school cool. On the road supporting their most recent album, “I Learned the Hard Way,” Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are scheduled to perform on Brown’s Island as part of the Friday Cheers summer music series Friday, June 24, at 6 p.m. venturerichmond.com. $10.
