G. Love & Special Sauce at Innsbrook

As far as getting to the people, G. Love has the instincts of a good politician. The band gets out there on tour, and still finds time for the issues — putting out albums regularly, dealing with band squabbles, working out a sound that stays firmly rooted in those basic values of blues and R&B. As for the diversity issue, the Philly trio has, in their decade together, folded in mellow pop, trippy electronica bits, hip-hop and Jack Johnson. Their platform is varied, but stable. G. Love plays Innsbrook with STS9 Friday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. $10-$25. Call 794-6700 or visit

Road Trip with Bio Ritmo!

Fifteen years of Afro-Cubano-Brazilian-funktronica salsa with Bio Ritmo: That's a lot of nights of people suddenly discovering they have hips under the influence of the group's brasstastic sound. Anyhow, Bio Ritmo's having a birthday Friday, Aug. 25, at 10 p.m. — yes, in Charlottesville, at the Satellite Ballroom. But being good Richmonders, they've arranged a party bus to ferry fans (and their hips) there and back. Holy crackers, it's like going on tour with the band, very quickly. But hey, this is the band's quincea¤era, an important birthday for young girls and large salsa bands alike. Tickets are $8-$10 at the Ballroom, (434) 293-7005. For party bus info call (804) 439-2571.

No River City in the River City

It's like some kind of puzzle, right? No, it's alt-country from Atlanta, which nobody's ever had an easy time defining. But with this five-piece the emphasis is on the personal, emotional quality of the lyrics, the folk-with-a-twang that suddenly explodes into full-bodied Southern rock. No River City is a band that enjoys exploring the boundaries of the alt-range. It plays Poe's Pub Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 9:30 p.m. $5. 648-2120.
