Schools Offer Outlet for Philanthropic Work

Thank you for your outstanding presentation in News & Features ("Good Giving," Dec. 12) sharing the holiday wishes of Richmond nonprofits. This service to the community with Connect Richmond was admirable.

Area schools, while not considered nonprofit as those listed, also can provide a forum for the philanthropic and volunteer giving in the community. Through mentoring, tutoring, volunteering in classrooms and for special events, members of the Richmond community can join many others who support Richmond Public Schools in assisting teachers and students as they strive for academic success.

New this year to RPS and to Virginia is DonorsChoose.org, where postings of teachers' classroom supplies and needs can be viewed online. "Citizen philanthropists" from any computer anywhere in the world can choose which they would like to fund -- partially or fully. Donors receive thank-yous from the teachers and students along with photos of the activities related to the project. This is a great way to feel as if you are a part of school success — one classroom at a time. For more information go to www.richmond.k12.va.us; Partnerships; Contributing.
