Rosco Bandana at the Camel

Tuesday, Sept. 17. 8 p.m.

If this were the 1970s, Rosco Bandana would have found a loving home on FM radio between Tom Petty, the Band and Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac. In this day and age, you’ll never hear the Mississippi septet’s white-boy, bluesy rock folk on commercial rock radio because, as we well know, commercial radio is a dead format content to rehash ancient, overplayed glories for the necrophilia crowd. And that’s a pity. While fans of the Black Keys, Bright Eyes, Iron and Wine and Neutral Milk Hotel will find much to enjoy about the group, middle-aged people probably will never hear them unless some 20-something hips them to their classic rock today sound. The group’s debut release, “Time to Begin,” listens like a survey of 20th century musical reference points. With its acoustic assimilations of rock, folk, country and blues, it’s a record that Dr. Johnny Fever from WKRP in Cincinnati most certainly would have played to appeal to Dylan fans. Roscoe Bandana plays Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Camel. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $7. thecamel.org. — Chris Bopst
