Riverrock comes to muddy life.

Since when did Richmond's summer season start feeling like an episode of “Lost”? For some reason Brown's Island just doesn't want you to leave its sequestered shores. There's no way around it. Look on the bright side; at least you don't have to endure nefarious smoke monsters, mysterious natives or the potential for time travel -- just a bunch of rowing, running and rocking. Celebrating Richmond's active river life, the first Riverrock is a two-day event featuring competitions in freestyle biking, kayaking, ultimate-air dog jumps and a 5K mud run. For those looking for a less adrenaline-based experience, there will also be food vendors and interactive exhibits as well as musical performances by artists such as the Annuals, Horsehead, the Transmitters and Rusted Root. Things kick off Friday, May 15, at 4 p.m., continuing Saturday, May 16, at 9 a.m. For a list of the day's free events or to register for the competitions, visit www.sportsbackers.org. — Mike Hilleary
