Rex Richardson’s dual-CD release party promises to be one of the most significant musical events of the fall season. The world-class, globetrotting trumpet virtuoso and Virginia Commonwealth University professor will start the evening with a quintet playing selections from his Summit Records release, “Blue Shift.” The evening ends with “Dukal Bugles” from Richardson’s second CD, “Bugles Over Zagreb: The Music of Doug Richards.” It’s a brilliant showpiece based in equal parts on the styles of a series of great Duke Ellington trumpeters and Richardson’s phenomenal capabilities. The fiendishly difficult finale features a big band composed of Richmond’s finest musicians, led by the piece’s composer and arranger, VCU jazz program founder Doug Richards. The show is Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for general admission. thebroadberry.com.
